I am a pastor at The Church at Cherrydale in Greenville, SC. I married Sarah in 2003, and we have four children: Corrie, Avery, Hudson, and Willa.
I completed my formal education in 2015, earning a PhD in Applied Theology from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. Along with this degree, I also have a MDiv from Southeastern and a MA in Biblical Counseling from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary.
I've served on a church staff since 1998. Before coming to Cherrydale, I served alongside the great team at Crosspoint Church in Clemson, SC. They sent us back to Greenville to start a church in 2009, and I've served as teaching pastor in this church for the last six years.
My passions for pastoral ministry and discipleship have led me to write a number of books and articles related to these topics. I hope you will find these written resources helpful and encouraging as you seek to make disciples, love the church, or lead God's people.
Regret Will Kill You Unless You Kill It with Promises

Regret is as deadly as worry.
One confronts an unknown future, the other an unfortunate past. Both seem unwilling to relinquish their death-grip once they...

4 Questions to Ask Before Critiquing Others
Matt Rogers - 0
Christians can, and should, speak to issues that shape the thoughts, actions, and affections of others. Should we see a person, concept, or trend that is destined to destroy others, we’d be sinfully negligent to not speak to the issue. So the question is not “if” we should speak ‒ we should.
What I Wish I’d Known About Slowing Down for God

God can, and does, use young men and women to do amazing things. For this we should be thankful. But far more often, the combination of youthful zeal, prideful passion, and immature idealism forms a toxic combination in the soul.
Complaining Isn’t Authentic, It’s a Waste of Time
Matt Rogers - 0
We all complain far more than we should and far more than we probably think we do. If it’s authenticity that we seek ‒ the reality is that we who are in Christ have far better lives than we deserve.
Generosity Isn’t Just About Money
Matt Rogers - 0
In an age of platform-seeking celebrities, it’s easy to overlook this reality. Both inside and outside of the church, nobody is the person they are without the investment of others. A glimpse in the rear-view mirror of life will reveal that the mysterious hand of God’s sovereignty often worked through the love, investment, and sacrifice of others. We are who we are because of other people.
Everyone Can See the Log Hanging out of Your Eye. Why Can’t You?
Matt Rogers - 0
Here’s the problem ‒ at least in my own life. The log is so hard to see. No one should miss a log hanging out of their eye, much less be able to notice the meager speck in someone else’s. But we do it all the time. Why? Why is the log of my own sin so hard to see?
